Hip-Hop ‘Empire’ Takes Over Fox 5 News Each Wednesday

WNYWIt’s another example of the troubling state of local news.

In an effort to promote the second season of Fox’s successful drama, Empire, based on the music industry, WNYW is unthinkably giving away its last 30 minutes following each episode. Anchors Steve Lacy and Dari Alexander host the After Empire party, complete with hip-hop themed performances and DJs spinning on the turntables. Even this week, just 24 hours after a cop was gunned down, wasn’t enough to alter their programming, although hosting duties went to entertainment reporter Simone Boyce.

Yes, a station’s late newscast (still has the Fox 5 graphic in the corner with time and temperature) airing live music. Ever heard of that one?

This makes sense on the morning newscast Good Day New York, especially in the lighter 9 a.m. hour where performers regularly take the stage.

Mister Cee Resigns From Hot 97 Amid New Prostitution Allegations

CeeInfluential hip hop producer and DJ Calvin LeBrun, known to millions as Mister Cee, resigned from Hot 97/WQHT today. Cee announced to loyal listeners during his midday mix show that it would be his final time scratching records.

“It’s not a joke, today is my last day on Hot 97. I’m doing what I feel is right for the betterment of the station,” Cee said.

Just before Cee told his audience, the Internet lit up with word that he allegedly solicited a drag queen named Bimbo Winehouse for his services.

It is not the first time that Cee’s extremely private life crashed into his professional life.

in 2011, Cee was arrested for receiving oral sex in his car from an apparent transvestite.

Hot 97 morning co-host Peter Rosenberg tweeted his candid thoughts of Cee.

Nicki Minaj: ‘I Just Found You Annoying,’ Upon Making Peace with Hot 97’s Rosenberg

Nicki and RosenbergBy JERRY BARMASH

It was 51 weeks in the making, but there is happiness in the Hip Hop world!

The long weekend ended with listeners getting ice water splashed in their faces as rapping superstar Nicki Minaj was an in-studio guest this morning on Hot 97.

Minaj buried the hatchet with morning co-host Peter Rosenberg. At issue, Rosenberg (left) took offense with Minaj at last year’s Summer Jam concert for her choice of pop hit Starships.

The interview (see video below) was brokered by program director Ebro Darden.

“This is on you, sir, where would you like this interview to go?” he asked at the outset.

Rosenberg admitted he was excited to reconnect with Minaj, adding that he’s become linked with the star since the controversy.

“I wonder if Nicki knows that she has come up in my life every day for 350 days,” Rosenberg said.

Rosenberg, looking directly at Minaj said his feelings for Starships, which was played at his September wedding, hadn’t changed.

“I was bummed out that it took the life that it took,” Rosenberg said. “…I’m sorry that things went as left as they did. I never had ill-feelings about you as a human being.”

After Rosenberg’s apology, Minaj countered.

“It’s cool. It’s water under the bridge,” Minaj said. “It’s so long ago, I can’t even act like I care anymore.”

Turbulent Country Superstar George Jones Dead at 81

JonesBy JERRY BARMASH

Country music had many stars but since the 1950s there was only one George Jones. He had numerous hits throughout the decades, but he also became known for his binge drinking and violent rages.

Jones died today at age 81 in Nashville, where he was hospitalized last week with a fever and what doctors call irregular blood pressure.

In 1962, Jones recorded one of his signature songs, She Thinks I Still Care.

He received many awards during his career, including a member of the 1992 Country Music Hall of Fame.

Ed Salamon, the programmer at WHN in the 1970s, who just wrote a book to commemorate 40 years since the station’s flip to Country, recalls a unique memory of Jones.

“In the book I tell the story of how WHN had promoted a live broadcast with George Jones from the Bottom Line and he climbed out of their bathroom window to avoid doing the show,” Salamon tells Tuned In.
