Greg Kelly Out at Fox5; Lori Stokes Takes the ‘Good Day’ Seat

The long run for Greg Kelly as co-anchor of the successful Good Day New York is over. He’ll say goodbye with a tribute Friday, TunedIn has learned. Lori Stokes (below), the veteran morning anchor at Channel 7, is ready to grab the seat next to Rosanna Scotto, starting Wednesday.

But first, expect a tribute to Kelly before signing off Friday morning.

It’s not a complete shock as we speculated last month that Kelly was likely the “odd man out” with Stokes’ impending arrival.

The why is more complicated.

Kelly and Scotto were a ratings juggernaut, even eclipsing the network news programs on occasion. The popular duo were together for four years until a 2012 promotion landed Kelly as the WNYW lead evening anchor. But just six months later and Kelly is an asterisk to history, one of the worst anchor stints in New York history.

Kelly resumed the famed chemistry with Scotto in January 2013.

Despite that strong rapport, several people have said Kelly, the son of former NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly, isn’t liked by most people in the newsroom.

However, speculation has Kelly liked by at least one person–namely President Donald Trump— in whose administration he could find a position. Sources say Kelly often speaks positively about former Fox morning colleague Heather Nauert and her new role as State Department spokesperson. We’re told it’s actually changed Kelly’s demeanor to calm and happy, a departure from his usual difficult personality.

As for Stokes, leaving the top AM early news program in New York is also curious. But insiders say Stokes bailed on Eyewitness News because she was offered a new contract with a pay cut.

She surprised many last month with decision to leave Channel 7 after 17 years.

Morning Anchor Shakeup at WNYW/Channel 5

It starts with Sukanya Krishnan (left), the longtime WPIX morning host. There she was this week as co-anchor of the Channel 5/WNYW precursor to Good Day New York. She is teaming with Jennifer Lahmers, who is usually seen in the evening at the desk or covering a story in the field. Now, the two ladies get the Good Day New York lead-in from 4:30-7am each weekday.

But WNYW has more surprises up its sleeve. As first reported by FTV Live, Lori Stokes, who recently ended a 17-year run on WABC/Channel 7, is moving onto the Fox O and O.

What happens next is still to be determined. Sources say Stokes is expected to join Channel 5 in November as co-anchor of the popular Good Day New York. Reportedly, she will team with Rosanna Scotto, thus ending the longtime duo with Greg Kelly. If that does materialize, Kelly could be the odd man out.

“I always said I’d like to see him back in the trenches doing the war correspondent thing,” Former Fox5 colleague  says. “It’s in his blood. I’d love to see him as spokesman for his dad’s [former police commissioner, Ray Kelly] campaign for mayor, or better yet–president!”

While we don’t know the inner workings, it’s clearly a gamble upsetting the chemistry with Greg and Rosanna. Stokes (right) has a strong track record in the daypart and WABC is usually rating winner in the morning (if not the rest of the day), but will she and Scotto gel? Is it risky to have two females anchor the broadcast? Time will tell.

WNYW’s Greg Kelly Fawns and Flirts With Reporter in Bikini

GilliganGreg Kelly is getting lambasted online about his inappropriate behavior on a recent episode of WNYW’s Good Day New York. Despite his borderline awkward exchange with a bikini clad Anna Gilligan, the blame falls directly at station management’s feet.

Like him or not, Kelly was just being Kelly. We’ve seen these moments before; sometimes they appear contrived when his on-air mom Rosanna Scotto has to reign him in, if not scold him. This was one of those times.

Of course, Kelly isn’t six years old and should know the difference between a good boy and being a problem child.

Gilligan, the Good Day entertainment reporter, was live from Action Park for its reopening. She disrobed to show off her body as she took a swing across the new Tarzan ride.

Major WPIX Overhaul Could Be on the Way

Tamsen ScottThe fate of WPIX’s news director is likely tied to next month’s pivotal ratings performance. Mark Effron got the position a year ago and, although he made several personnel moves, it’s no different than rearranging the Titanic chairs.

Channel 11 has been facing an ongoing battle for eyeballs. The numbers have remained poor, primarily at 10 p.m. with Effron ‘s biggest acquisition— when Scott Stanford was pulled away from sports for a full-time opportunity to co-anchor with Tamsen Fadal.

“There’s a growing feeling within Tribune that it’s not working at 5 and 10 [p.m.],”  a PIX insider charges.

Morning is another problem area for WPIX, with no ground gained on WNYW’s powerhouse Good Day New York. The Rosanna Scotto/Greg Kelly led program typically beats some of the big boys….having better results than NBC’s Today show.

The May sweeps could bring potential sweeping change to the Tribune flagship. Sources tell Tuned In this is a final chance for on-air talent and behind-the-scenes staffers to fight for their jobs.

What Was the Most Memorable Media Moment of 2013?

Stanford1

Is Scott Stanford your pick for top media moment of 2013?

The clock is about to strike midnight on 2013. That means it’s time go down memory lane for the Best Moments of the Year. Good or bad, there were several standout moments representing the media landscape in New York.

Among them,

  • Rob Morrison was under media scrutiny for allegedly choking his wife, Ashley, in February. Within days of the incident, Rob was officially gone from his morning anchoring duties at WCBS-TV.
  • Greg Kelly, however, was welcomed back to mornings, as co-anchor of WNYW’s Good Day New York. Kelly spent six short months as the station’s lead anchor at night. The failed experiment caused a “do-over” in January, re-teaming the popular Kelly with Rosanna Scotto.
  • WPIX made some waves by hiring sportscaster Scott Stanford as a news anchor.
  • No need for a news anchor at WWOR. The Fox affiliate pulled the plug on the Ten O’Clock News and any semblance of a news department. Continue reading

Good Day Hosts Mulling Election Campaign

WNYW130812070159Greg Kelly and Rosanna Scotto weren’t just reporting about the election season today. The anchor team is looking to parlay their popularity into a possible run for political office. Kelly and Scotto told Good Day New York viewers about the stunt at the start of today’s show, as they debuted modest campaign signs with their names.

“We’re very close to announcing our candidacies for citywide office,” Kelly said on the WNYW show.

That office wasn’t disclosed, if Kelly and Scotto have even made that determination.

Kelly pointed out that with enough signatures on a petition they could be on the ballot as Independents by August 20.

“We have no agenda yet,” Kelly said.

“Do we have a platform?” Scotto questioned.

“We’ll get to that,” he joked.

They spent a chunk of the “more-relaxed” 9 a.m. portion trying to woo voters on the street, and even guests, to sign their petition.

Scotto suggested going for the “whole gusto” and a run for Mayor.

“That opens us up to all kinds of charges and investigations,” Kelly warned.

He recommended an office that “nobody really cares about.” Asked by Scotto which one, he replied, “You name it. There are plenty to choose from.”

Kelly and Scotto were planning to meet people at a subway station today to gauge interest.

WNYW Promotes Antwan Lewis to Weekend Co-Anchor

AntwanBy JERRY BARMASH

Channel 5’s Antwan Lewis, the likable early morning anchor and reporter, is on the move. Lewis, who joined WNYW in 2010, has been promoted to weekend co-anchor alongside Christina Park.

Lewis was the epitome of a team player in January when he was pressed into service as Good Day Early Call/Wake Up anchor. He joined Juliet Huddy from 4:30 to 7:00 a.m. That slot opened when Dave Price immediately resigned after being demoted to the early morning newscasts.

Lewis and Park will begin their new tandem Saturday.

Station publicists and even VP/GM Lew Leone refused to confirm or give any comment to Tuned In. However, Lewis’ WNYW bio page has been updated stating his new role at Channel 5. The bio adds that Lewis is a four-time Emmy winner.

The station has not revealed who will replace Lewis in the early morning slot.

Source: Steve Lacy and Dari Alexander Are ‘Having More Fun Together’

WNYW130204220047By JERRY BARMASH

Did the latest round of musical anchor chairs prove successful for WNYW?

Now that Steve Lacy has been the station’s lead anchor for three months, Tuned In explores if the changeover worked.

Just to get readers caught up, Lacy assumed the anchor duties at 6 and 10 p.m. on January 25, while the Greg Kelly nighttime experiment ended abruptly seven months after it started. Kelly is back with his Good Day cohort Rosanna Scotto, while Lacy is now teamed with Dari Alexander for the Channel 5 late newscast.

“[Lacy] was really surprised that he got brought to nights,” a source close to the situation tells Tuned In.

Because of good rapport with former Good Day Wake Up/First Edition co-anchor Juliet Huddy, the source says it was a “bittersweet” move from mornings.

“But, overall it’s worked out,” the source says, “because he’s a solid guy.”

Whenever Lacy broadcasts, the source says, he gets along well with all colleagues.

“He’s known as somebody who is easy to work with.”
