Michael Jack Successor Expected to be Named Monday

mj+new1WNBC is ready to hand over the reigns of power. Tuned In has learned that Channel 4 is holding a staff meeting at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

While details haven’t been revealed, it appears the newsroom will learn that WCAU President and GM Eric Lerner is succeeding Michael Jack in those roles.

At that same time, sources say NBC’s WCAU in Philadelphia has called its own full staff meeting.

Jack previously announced his Channel 4 retirement for June. He has been in charge of the NBC flagship station for five years.

During Jack’s tenure at 30 Rock, Comcast completed its purchase of General Electric, which was finalized in March 2013.

Under Jack’s leadership, there was tumult in the ratings. A handful of anchor changes dotted the landscape in the last few years and viewers needed a scorecard to know the talent.

Tom Llamas left for ABC News last year, causing Channel 4 to form a split newscast at 5 p.m. Speaking of split, the anchor team of Chuck Scarborough and Shiba Russell was broken up in early 2014. Russell, hired in the summer of 2012, was swapped with Sibila Vargas, who along with Rob Schmitt was brought in from KCBS in Los Angeles. Another anchor added to the roster was Stacey Bell, who joined WNBC on the weekend desk last year.

Jack’s WNBC bio indicates that he managed the local website nbcnewyork.com and additional platforms including taxis and PATH trains.

Lerner has been with WCAU for four years. Prior to that, he had a six-year stint as GM at KIRO, the CBS affiliate in Seattle.

Remembering a Legendary Voice, Don Pardo Dies at 96

PardoHis deep voice was a throwback to the era of old time radio staff announcers. Don Pardo didn’t start his career welcoming viewers week after week to Saturday Night Live. It just seems that way. Pardo began a lifetime gig with the Peacock Network in 1944. Seventy years later he was still at the mic for SNL.

Pardo died Monday at age 96.

As Pardo joined the roster on radio, NBC and General David Sarnoff were experimenting with television. His voice would become even more popular on the burgeoning medium.

Pardo’s personality made him a go-to-guy among the NBC stable of voices for game show duty. He was announcer on the original Price Is Right and Jeopardy!. But as the latter ended its 11-year run in 1975, Pardo got another boost as SNL started later that year.

Jodi Applegate to Fill-in as Host on WLNY’s The Couch

Jodi12The return of Jodi Applegate to local morning television awaits! Applegate, sitting on the TV sidelines since leaving WPIX late in 2012, will join The Couch for the week of September 9.

We may be seeing quite a bit of Applegate on the WLNY two-hour morning show. Co-host Lisa Kerney just gave birth to her second daughter and is on materity leave. Colleague Carolina Bermudez, who is in the last trimester of her pregnancy, will soon have her own time off.

Applegate, who had her first child earlier this year via gestational carrier, was co-host of WNYW/Channel 5’s Good Day New York from 2004 to 2008. But she is looking ahead to her Couch appearance.

“It’s a great show. Informative and fun to watch,” Applegate tells Tuned In. “I’m looking forward to hanging out on The Couch!”

Applegate is also gaining a presence on radio with fill-in hosting on WOR. She returns Friday with Jack Ford, with whom she co-anchored NBC”s Weekend Today in the 1990s, for the 10 a.m. to noon shift.

Gumbel: Matt Lauer is Going Through a “Difficult Time”

GumbelThe parallels are striking for Bryant Gumbel, who spent 15 years as co-anchor on NBC’s Today show with the current host, the embattled Matt Lauer.

Lauer has been under fire since Ann Curry was replaced on the program last summer by Savannah Guthrie.

Gumbel was stuck in the middle of his own on-air triangle 24 years ago when Jane Pauley got pushed off the show for Deborah Norville.

Tuned In caught up with Gumbel Monday at the Peabody Awards, where his Real Sports was honored with the trophy for broadcasting excellence.

Gumbel said he and Lauer are best friends, who talk regularly and play golf.

“He’s going through a difficult time,” Gumbel admitted. “But I think part of that comes with the territory. It wasn’t that long ago when I was going through the same thing, at the same place.”

Gumbel also weathered a scandal at the morning broadcast, when a scathing memo about personnel was leaked in 1989.

“It happens, it’s part of life,” Gumbel said. “Nobody’s going to pass the plate and feel sorry for you.”

Tomorrow Marks Homecoming Day for Jodi Applegate

worBy JERRY BARMASH

Now that we have your attention, no, Jodi Applegate is not headed back to WPIX.

Instead, Applegate will relive her glory days at NBC’s Weekend Today. Tomorrow she’ll do her latest guest hosting stint for John Gambling on WOR Radio. However, this time it will be different.

The broadcasting veteran will have former Weekend Today colleague Jack Ford as her co-host.

“Should be a fun reunion,” Applegate tells Tuned In.

Applegate was arguably at her career zenith during her 1996-1999 tenure on Weekend Today. She followed that with the 9 a.m. Later Today.

Applegate will also host the Monday morning show on WOR, although it is not likely that Ford can join that day.
